Help with laminating

Welcome back to Growing Spaces for 09-10. I hope this blog will be used for your comments and ideas as we grow together through the year. Please remember you can post answers to each other's posts or start a new strand of your own.

One of the more urgent yet mundane things I need your input on is how to handle paying for laminating. I have already bought six double rows and they are now gone. Without money from the state I have had to buy this out of the office account. I have spent over $400 since August for your laminating film not counting the laminating cost for all the car signs. I don't want to charge teachers for this service, but I need your input on how to solve this dilemma.

  1. I'm not sure about how to solve this problem. This might sound mean, but just be a momma about it! Let the office buy a set amount and when it is gone, it is gone. It kinda stinks, but we can't spend the money if we don't have it. We will just have to pay to have it done somewhere. We also need to watch waste. Just incase people didn't know, you can stop the laminating or pause it to set up a new row of papers or whatever you are working on. I have seen people just let it run while the set a new row of materials. They all start looking like stair steps and there is tons of waste. Just push the stop button and then start it again when you are ready. It will not burn your items.

  2. Yes, I think Mindi is right, unless we were given a donation or raised money for it, I dont think there is any other way around it...We cant spend all of the office money on laminating. We can budget some money for it but once its gone if every teacher would pay around $2 we could buy some more????

  3. Some schools charge a set price per foot, but then someone has to keep up with it...

  4. Sorry to post twice - how exactly can we "start a new strand"? If I'm not mistaken only the admin of the blog can do this...

  5. I like Natalie's idea about the teachers donating $$. I would be willing to pay $2-$5 to help buy more lamination film. Another idea is to ask for donations from businesses. My brother owns a business in Huntsville and I bet he would be willing to donate the $$ for a few rolls of film. Mrs. Ritchey, how much does each roll cost??
I don't like the idea of not providing film...I spend a lot of time making games, focus walls, AMSTI math games, etc. and would like to be able to reuse the materials next year.

  6. One way we may be able to reduce the amount laminated would be to stop laminating the focus wall pages. You can use sheet protectors and just slide the pages in and out every week.
I would be willing to pay a few dollars for lamination film. I also want to be able to reuse the materials I spend so much time making.

  7. What if we took up a donation from teachers? Like Natalie said, just a small amount about 2 to 3 dollars to help pay for some laminating. We also need to watch wasting the lamination like Mindi said. Otherwise...if it's gone it's gone, not much to do about it now :(

  8. I agree with Sarah about the focus wall pages. That is a lot of laminating if every teacher is doing this. I use slip sleeves. It works just fine for me. I would be willing to give money to help pay for laminating, but we do need to be careful and not waste it like Natalie said.

  9. Putting your focus wall in page protectors is a great way to save on laminating because think about how many pages we all laminate for the focus wall (times each teacher)! That is a whole lot! Also, I heard (which it may not be right) that the double rolls cost about $52.00. If we each donated out of our local money maybe $25.00 and bought laminating with it...that should give us enough until the end of the year. Another teache and I were talking about that...it's just a thought!

  10. I suggest each teacher donating $25 from their funds.

  11. Is there a way we can charge for what we use? I have had to pay per yard before. I just don't want to pay money and there not be any lamination left. Also, I wouldn't want to pay money and then have someone that didn't pay use a lot of the lamination. If we donate, is there a way that we can make sure that everyone donates? I've just been trying to think of a fair way for us to do this.

  12. We must have laminating film to protect those things that we spend time making to facilitate student learning. We all have donation money from the beginning of the year and this is something that all students will get to use. If we have to ask teachers to donate money from their local account ($20-$25) it should provide us with film for the rest of the year.

  13. I agree with the idea of of teachers donating $$ to make sure we can protect the things we make from year to year. But it wouldn't hurt to have some businesses donate to that account also.

  14. I am good with whatever the group decides. I think it might have worked better when we had someone (Ms. Blair) do the laminating. It kept the waste down to a minimum. However, I am not suggesting that she has to do it. I know of several schools that have their laminating done by one person, rather than everybody doing their own. Plus, we may have some teachers who do not use the laminator very often and it doesn't seem fair for them to pay the same price as someone who uses it every week.

  15. I think each teacher contributing out of donations is a good idea.

But from past experience, I think if one person is responsible for all of the laminating that could take a long time, and we might not get things back by the time we need them. There were many times I would put things in the basket to be laminated and would get them back a week after I needed them because there was so much to be done by one person.
